Through Education, Service, and Awareness Hurst Middle School students are working to help save Louisiana wetlands.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP OUR VALUABLE WETLANDS?

 EDUCATION

  • Start a service-learning project at your school!
What Is Service Learning?

National Service-Learning Partnership

Louisiana Service Commission

New Orleans Joe and Dorothy Brown Foundation

Students should start an environmental service-learning project at their school! This will allow other students to learn firsthand how important the wetlands are. Students will start doing more activities about the wetlands. I think this is great because instead of just seeing pictures of wetlands, you can see it all in real life!
Troi P. 13

Start a service-learning project at your school! Every year we go to the wetlands. We learn so much, but also have a great time. When we have fun we learn more and remember the information that we learned. It’s a great way to learn, have fun, and help the wetlands at the same time!
Elana A. 13 years old

Kids should start a service-learning project at their school such as the Wetland Watchers. Using what we learn to inform others is a big help.

  • Create an activity for younger students that will help them understand why wetlands are important to us.

I think students should learn more about problems in their local area. The more they learn, the more they will see ways they can help.
Jeffrey M. 12

If we make activities that we can teach to younger kids, it would help them to realize how important our wetlands are.
Kayla Elliott 13 yrs. Old

I think creating activities for younger students helps them to get involved. It also gets them excited about coming to Hurst Middle School!
Natalie B. 12 years old

If we do activities with younger students about wetlands, it gets lots of attention from the parents and the kids.
Vincent T. 12 years old

Hold activities for younger students during the summer and on weekends so more kids can get involved. We can do things like research and help the foundations, plant trees, and do a lot more to help.

  • Use Louisiana Wetlands as a topic of your social studies project.

World Issues: Louisiana Wetlands

Education Resources

A lot of people see the social studies projects. Some of them even go to state and national levels where many more people see them. This could raise awareness about how much we need them so we can begin taking steps to save the wetlands.
Mimi O. 13 yrs old

With your social studies project you can give lots of ideas of how to help the wetlands for everyone to see.

  • Choose an environmental topic for the science fair!

Environmental Science Fair Ideas

Students should do water quality projects for the science fair so they can learn how to keep the water clean not just for us, but for the animals to have a good place to live.
Zattasia S.   Age 15

I think kids should do their science project about wetlands. This would help the wetlands because if they have the info about it in public places, maybe people would actually stop and read about the wetlands and maybe hey would care more about the wetlands.
Caitlin V. 12 years old

Choose something about wetlands for your science project because a lot of the community sees the projects.

  • Organize a school wide wetlands poster contest and hang them up in your school and around the community.

Example of poster contest rules

Students can organize a poster contest and post the winners and the other entries around town to get the word out to help wetlands.
Carly R.  Age 12

If students organize a poster contest, it will help the wetlands by letting people learn about the wetlands and how you can help.
Courtney C. Age 12

I think that organizing a poster contest would be a good idea. The top 60 posters can be hung up around City Hall. People would learn about our wetlands and maybe take steps to save them!
Alan F.            12 years old

Organize a poster contest because it can tell the problems of the wetlands and state solutions. It can also show pictures of the wetlands.

  • Work as a group to create a local wetland identification guide.

Students can play identification games where kids take pictures of different plants, animals, etc. in the wetlands and then try to identify it. Then take all of the pictures and put them together as an identification guide. I like having contests, and prizes because I think kids should have a little fun and education!
