Through Education, Service, and Awareness Hurst Middle School students are working to help save Louisiana wetlands.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP OUR VALUABLE WETLANDS?

 SERVICE

  • Do not litter and pick up trash when you see it!

Marine Litter Fact Sheet

Kids can save the wetlands by cleaning it everyday. This will make a difference because it will help the wetlands stay clean and fresh.
Rodrick D.  13 years old

Kids can pick up trash in wetland areas. People throw all kinds of trash out there. My plan would help by making these areas clean and healthy for plants and animals.
David C. 13

  • Recycle what you can. Every little bit helps

School Recycling Facts

Louisiana Recycling Center Information

One thing kids can do to help save the wetlands is to not litter or pick up litter when they wee it. This can help because litter is pollution and if we slow or stop the pollution we can help make our wetlands healthier. So recycle what you can, pick up trash that you see, and do not litter at all! Then you will be doing your part to save the wetlands.
Mimi O. 13

I think people need to start recycling, because people will stop throwing things on the ground. They need to help the wetlands out.
Dwayne T. 15 years old

  • Organize a trash clean-up at a park or waterway near your community!

International Coastal Clean-up Facts and Information

Kids can organize a contest of who can collect the most trash and have prizes. When you go to the wetlands the kids could plant and then they can have a recess out there.
Christopher W. 13

Kids can do many things to help Louisiana wetlands. Groups can work together to clean parks and make them more beautiful. We can also make nature trails so people will come and visit wetland areas and appreciate them more.

  • Plant a tree or organize a large tree planting!

National Arbor Day Foundation Ideas and Resources

One thing that kids can do to help save the wetlands is plant trees. This will help the creatures at the wetlands have more air and places to live. It will also add to the beauty of our wetlands.
Cassie R. 12 years

I think kids can plant trees. Trees provide us with oxygen, it gives shelter for animals, it keeps the shoreline from eroding, and it makes our earth more beautiful!
Alexis O. 12

I think we need to help the wetlands by increasing the amount of plants. I also think this would help increase the population of animals.
Evan B. 13 years old

Planting trees is very important! We can buy baby trees or seeds and go plant them in the ground at the wetlands. We can fix it up so it looks nice. We can help to save the wetlands by just doing little things like picking up after myself, planting new trees, and picking up trash out of the water. If we just help a little it will make a big difference.

  • Work with organizations like the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation and the Barataria National Estuaries Program to adopt an area near you and start a water quality monitoring program!

  • Do not let your fish or pets go in the wetlands! Invasive plant and animal species are harmful to our local habitats!

I think that if more people helped clear Water Hyacinth out of the water it would help with saving more underwater animals because the Hyacinth will not be there to block the sun and block the waterways.
Joshua C. 12

People need to know not to let their pets go in the wetlands because these animals can ruin a habitat and make more of our animals endangered.
Sherman Jones 12 years old

If people keep letting their fish and pets go in the wetlands, they will be all over the place and threaten the environment.
Gernika R. Age 14

Do not let your fish go in the wetlands, because it will take over the population of all the other fish.
Dwayne S. 13 years old

Do not let your pets go in the wetlands! They do not belong in the wetlands and they can eat the animals that naturally live there.
Jenna J.  12 years old

  • Work with your local government or industry to organize collection points for chemicals, such as paint and oil.

Household Hazardous Waste Day Information

I think that because people throw toxic things into the garbage, they can leak out and end up in the wetlands. Some of those things can be recycled. People need to know how bad these things can hurt the wetlands. I want them to know so they will care.
Alex O. Age: 12

  • Work with your local government or industry to establish recycling drop off sites!

Recycling Facts

Recycling Centers

I think we need to work with the community to make recycling drop off points. This will help the wetlands a lot, because people throw a lot of trash that can be recycled in the water.

  • Organize a wetland photography contest and display all of the entrees in a public place!

Environmental Photography Tips

Kids should organize a wetlands photography contest and display the entries to the public. Doing this show people how great the wetlands really are. The photography could also show how polluted and badly treated some areas are. Hopefully this will help the natural things in the wetlands environment.

  • Research a list of threatened or endangered animals in your area and help others find out what we can do to give them a better chance to survive!

Louisiana Threatened and Endangered Animal List and Facts

Kids can research threatened animals and discuss ways to help them. If we find out why they are having problems maybe we can do something about it.
Cody L. 13 yrs old

If I learn more about why animals are threatened then I can try to fid ways to prevent the problems.
Heather B.   13 yrs old

Kids can research local animals to find out why they are threatened and how we can help them and what is wrong with the place where they live.
Lionel S. 13 years old

Just knowing which animals are threatened would help, because then people could try to help save them.

  • Recycle your Christmas tree with an agency that will place them in the wetlands!

Christmas Tree Recycling Program Facts and History

Christmas Tree Recycling Information

Donate your Christmas tree to help build up the land in the wetlands.
Austin B. 13 yrs old

By recycling our Christmas trees we can put them in fences on the coast to catch all of the sediment. While their branches catch the sediment, it will help build up the land mass. This will help us to slow down the erosion along our coast.
Emily S. 12 years old

I think people should give their Christmas tree to the recycling program because it will be good for the wetlands and good for the environment. The land made by the Christmas tree project will make more woods and grass. It will also make more homes for other animals.
Leon G.  Age 12

Christmas time is all about giving, so why not donate your Christmas tree to the wetlands! When you give your tree, they lay the trees in fences where they collect dirt and build the land.
Mariah L. Age 12

Christmas tree recycling programs help to keep the land in place and make new land.
Juan S. Age 13

I think that we should get a lot of Christmas trees from around the country and bring them along the wetlands to help build up land.
